Karol Szymanowski - Piano Works

Polish pianist Krystian Zimerman returns to his roots to pay tribute to his compatriot Karol Szymanowski on the 140th anniversary of the composer’s birth. Having studied his solo piano works for decades, Zimerman presents a new album of richly varied repertoire spanning the period from 1899 to the mid-1920s. His aim is to shed new light on this less familiar aspect of Szymanowski’s output and help cement his reputation as one of the great composers of piano music.
There is also a strong thread of friendship running through this album, linking both Szymanowski and Zimerman to legendary pianist Arthur Rubinstein, and Zimerman to the world-renowned acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota. Coupling repertoire captured this year at the Toyota-designed concert hall in Fukuyama with previously unreleased recordings made by Zimerman in 1994, Karol Szymanowski: Piano Works will be released by Deutsche Grammophon on 30 September 2022 on CD and digitally, including an immersive surround sound version. A 2-LP edition will follow on 21 October.

Beethoven - Complete Piano Concertos w/LSO, Rattle

Krystian Zimerman joined forces with Sir Simon Rattle and the London Symphony Orchestra last December in Beethoven's five piano concertos. Their spellbinding performances, streamed on DG Stage from LSO St Luke's and recorded live by Deutsche Grammophon, harvested a bumper crop of critical superlatives. Here was "history in the making", wrote The Times in its five-star review, while Bachtrack noted, "Purity and clarity are hallmarks of Zimerman's playing and there was an almost aristocratic composure to his phrasing and a velvet touch … Everything was meticulous, not … a quaver out of place."

Bernstein - The Age of Anxiety w/Berlin-Rattle

When Leonard Bernstein celebrated his 70th birthday, Krystian Zimerman was asked to perform Symphony No. 2 (The Age of Anxiety) with Bernstein for the first time. Full of praise for Zimerman's performance, Bernstein asked the pianist to perform the piece again when the composer turned 100. To fulfill that promise, Zimerman releases a new recording of Bernstein's Symphony No. 2, performed with the Berlin Philharmonic and conducted by Simon Rattle in his last appearance as its chief conductor.

Schubert Piano Sonatas - D959 & D960

This is legendary pianist Krystian Zimerman's first solo recital album for DG in over twenty-five years. He performs Schubert's Piano Sonatas D 959 & D 960, Schubert's last major compositions for the piano before his death. The album was recorded at the Kashiwazaki City Performing Arts Centre in Japan in January 2016.

Lutosławski PC & Symphony #2 w/Rattle - BPO

This album continues the successful collaboration of Krystian Zimerman and Sir Simon Rattle who have previously recorded for Deutsche Grammophon Brahms's Piano Concerto no. 1.  This time, they turn their attention to works by Polish composer Witold Lutosławski.  Recorded at the Berlin Philharmonie, this recording highlights two seminal works of 20th century music. In 1960 Witold Lutosławski heard John Cage's Concert for Piano and Orchestra on Polish radio. It proved to be a seminal experience: "Those few minutes were to change my life decisively … While listening to it, I suddenly realized that I could compose music differently from that of my past."
