Charlie Hunter is not only a singular guitarist - he uniquely plays a custom-made seven-string ax that allows him to deliver bass grooves simultaneously with rhythm chords and solo notes - but he's also a creative whose style and expression continue to advance with each project he immerses himself into. Proof positive is Hunter's new album-and 18th as a leader-whimsically titled Everyone Has a Plan Until They Get Punched in the Mouth, out July 22nd on GroundUP Music/Verve Label Group. The superlative ten-tune collection of songs-all originals except for one cover-is steeped in the blues and r&b. Hunter has enlisted a stellar support team of trombonist Curtis Fowlkes, cornetist Kirk Knuffke and drummer Bobby Previte who play live in the studio for optimum effect.

Charlie Hunter produces Rob Dixon's 'Coast To Crossroads', and it's a serious case of the funk / Something Else
Indianapolis legend saxman Rob Dixon has broken out with a serious case of the funk and it's highly contagious. Coast To Crossroads is a very rare date led by him - only the second one, not counting one co-helmed by Wes Montgomery's organ player Melvin Rhyne - and that was ten years ago. But Dixon has hardly been quiet. He's toured plenty lately in guitarist Charlie Hunter's band and the time together re...
Ahead of two sets at Rudy's Jazz Room, Charlie Hunter discusses his passion for new sounds / Nashville Scene
When a piece of music stands out as unique and intriguing to Charlie Hunter, that's saying something. Innovative instrumentation and inspired collaborations have characterized his exemplary career of more than 25 years as a guitarist, bandleader and composer. In 1992, he made his initial impact on popular music playing seven-string guitar and organ with Michael Franti's group The Disposable Heroes o...
Charlie Hunter set for 5 Points Music Sanctuary / The Roanoke Times
Seven-string guitarist Charlie Hunter is a musician's musician, a guy who with one instrument can sound like at least two guys. What can be lost in thinking of Hunter's brain-twisting instrumental abilities is that he is a hyper-creative guy with a plethora of intriguing original songs, often with entertaining titles. For example, the slinky, horn-accented title cut of his latest album is "Everybody Has ...
Charlie Hunter Trio will kick off HopMonk Concert Series / Marin Independent Journal
I've often thought that Marin County has more guitar players per capita than anyplace west of Nashville. So, for serious players and hobbyists alike, this column is a heads up that Charlie Hunter, one of the most inventive and innovative guitarists of his generation, is coming to Marin on Sunday, kicking off the Novato HopMonk Tavern's Cookout Concert Series. That's not to say that general music fans won...

WMSE's Dr. Sushi will chat with Charlie Hunter in advance of 'Colectivo' show
Charlie Hunter, it seems, has always loved a good groove - from his early days in the San Francisco Bay area playing with the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy to his work with his own trio and with T.J. Kirk, the three-guitar band that drew its name and inspiration from Thelonious Monk, James Brown and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. He is both incredibly swift with technique and open to the spontaneity of improvisa...

Charlie Hunter - Everybody Has A Plan Q&A with VORTEX
Charlie Hunter may not quite be a household name, but some of his fans certainly are. Wielding a renowned talent for simultaneously balancing driving bass grooves with independent melodic and lead figures on custom seven- and eight-string guitars, Hunter has been sought for high-profile work with D'Angelo, Frank Ocean, Norah Jones, Christian McBride and Snarky Puppy. John Mayer, who collaborated with Hun...
Charlie Hunter plays Ronnie Scotts / The Times review
Best album title of the year? Charlie Hunter must surely be a contender for Everybody Has a Plan Until They Get Punched in the Mouth, a phrase borrowed from the boxer Mike Tyson. No one suffered any physical assaults at Ronnie Scott's, but there was a gloriously physical dynamic to a quartet display that generated almost as much electricity as a Mingus Big Band set. At the centre of it all, H...
Charlie Hunter plays Thekla / Bristol24/7 review
"Sorry we're late", Charlie Hunter greeted the crowd. "We got lost … in this boat." He was clearly impressed, however, with the novelty value of the Thekla as a gig space and, anyway, the delay let a slightly less small crowd assemble. Neither poor attendance nor an idiosyncratic venue dampened his ebullient nature and he launched, grinning, into the first number, a straight blues workout that sho...
Charlie Hunter - Everybody Has A Plan Until They Get Punched In The Mouth / Jazz Weekly review
8 string guitarist Charlie Hunter gets down to the roots here with drummer Bobby Previte and a two fisted horn team of Kirk Knuffke/ct and Curtis Fowlkes/tb. The feel hear is earthy rhythm and blues, and it works out quite well, as Hunter keeps to toe taping lines and simple grooves with the horns serving as framework on "We Don't Want Nobody Nobody Sent" and "No Money No Honey." Lots of blues and blue f...
Charlie Hunter: Everybody Has a Plan Until They Get Punched in the Mouth / relix review
Besides having some of the best album titles ever (Gentlemen, I Neglected to Inform You You Will Not Be Getting Paid is another), Charlie Hunter happens to be one hell of a jazz guitar player, songwriter and bandleader. Everybody Has a Plan… is his 19th album and one of his most potent. Over 10 mostly original tracks, Hunter, who handles bass duties on his seven-string axe, and his ...

Charlie Hunter's new album packs a punch / Lexington Herald Leader
Charlie Hunter is nothing if not resourceful. Halfway through his fine new album, "Everybody Has a Plan Until They Get Punched in the Mouth," the guitarist hunts and pecks out notes with cornetist Kirk Knuffke in purely exploratory fashion. Drummer Bobby Previte gradually joins in to sustain the barest suggestion of a groove. Then trombonist Curtis Fowlkes adds the closest thing the tune has to a bass li...
Charlie Hunter - EHAPUTGPITM makes 'Dirty Dog: July Pick of the Month'
On Charlie Hunter's - Everybody Has a Plan Until They Get Punched in the Mouth on Ground UP (Verve), Mr.Hunter has cultivated his own "sound" since he first emerged on the Jazz scene in the early 1990's. Eighteen albums later, he's still playing his unique 7 and 8 string guitars allowing him to simultaneously play basslines, rhythm guitar and solos. All but one of the pieces are his originals with th...

Charlie Hunter - EHAPUTGPITM gets 4 star review in Downbeat for September
Charlie Hunter, who simultaneously limns bass lines, chords and melodies on his seven-string guitar, showcases a dandy new quartet featuring longtime and sometime collaborators Bobby Previte (drums) and Curtis Fowlkes (trombone), plus robust 2015 DownBeat Critics Poll winner Kirk Knuffke (cornet). As usual with Hunter, Everybody carves a deep groove, with lots of space between the instruments and elbow r...

Charlie Hunter's Everybody Has a Plan Until They Get Punched in the Mouth is not only his first recording for a major label in nine years, but his first with a larger-than-trio-sized band since 2003. His personnel include drummer Bobby Previte, trombonist Curtis Fowlkes (who both played on 2015's Let the Bells Ring On and 2003's Right Now Move), and cornetist Kirk Knuffke. The album's tit...
Charlie Hunter - 'No Money, No Honey' / NPR: Songs We Love
Charlie Hunter, it seems, has always loved a good groove - from his early days in the San Francisco Bay area playing with the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy to his work with his own trio (check out "Funky Niblets") and with T.J. Kirk, the three-guitar band that drew its name and inspiration from Thelonious Monk, James Brown and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. These days, Hunter plays a seven-string guitar with...
