Brian Newman greets me with 'Dean Martin-like charisma' / Oprah Mag
It's a Thursday night at New York City's legendary Rose Bar inside the Gramercy Park Hotel, and seconds after Brian Newman dashes out of "Showboat," his 1971 Oldsmobile 98 LS (the vehicular inspiration behind his debut Verve Records album of the same name), he flies to the bar and greets me with Dean Martin-like charisma and words reminiscent of yesteryear: "Hey, baby, what's going on?" Brian Newman is t...

How cool is Brian Newman? / Inked Q&A
Let's just say, if there were a trumpet player in Goodfellas, it would have been played by Brian Newman. And if he were to get matching tattoos with someone, it would be with Lady GaGa and the tattoo would have been designed by Tony Bennett…and that's exactly what went down with Brian and Lady GaGa. Meet Brian Newman - this cat's got the chops to blow the roof off the joint, while dressed to the n...
Brian Newman shows his bona-fides on SHOWBOAT / Jazz Weekly
Here, for his first album for Verve, Trumpeter and vocalist Brian Newman shows the bona-fides of a jazzer that is able to connect with the masses in ways few people this side of Diana Krall are able. On vocals, he gives a swagger to a Caribbean flavored "Jockey Full of Bourbon" while crooning with pathos on a gloriously desultory "You Don't Know What Love Is" with a similarly distraught teaming with Gaga...

For over 10 years, Newman's role in the city's nightlife has ranged from different venues, performances with pop superstars and a residency at the Rose Bar at Gramercy Park Hotel. He is the bread and butter of jazz in the city. But it was not until this year that Newman released his second album, "Showboat," a releas...

Jazz-Fest chat with Brian Newman / BEDFORD & BOWERY
The man sitting next to me at the Black Penny in the French Quarter is very tall, pencil thin, in a black T-shirt and trousers with a skull-and-cross-bones belt buckle. He leans into his Vieux Carre cocktail with his tattoo sleeves propped on the bar, his pin-striped jacket hanging under it. In New Orleans, he could be anybody-a rocker, a random tourist, just a guy. But in barely 24 hours, he'll be headl...
