2CELLOS: Bio
Young Croatian cellists Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser, together known as 2CELLOS, have achieved sensational success by taking cello to a new level. Their playing style has broken down the boundaries between musical genres, from classical and film music to pop and rock. 2CELLOS have no limits when it comes to performing live and are equally as impressive playing Bach and Vivaldi as they are rocking out AC/DC.
2CELLOS rose to fame in 2011 when their version of Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" took the world by storm. The YouTube video became a massive viral sensation leading to a record deal with Sony Masterworks and an invitation to join Sir Elton John on his worldwide tour.
Despite their huge online following where they continue to amaze with new YouTube hits, 2CELLOS' main focus and dedication has always been playing live. The duo have sold out tours across the USA, Japan, South America, Australia, and Europe. They have performed at venues and events as prestigious as the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in the UK, The Ford's Theatre Annual Gala with President Obama, the Emmys in Los Angeles, Celebrity Fight Night Gala in Florence, Starkey Hearing Foundation Gala, and FIFA's Ballon D'Or in Switzerland.
2CELLOS have also appeared on major TV shows such as The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Monday Night Football in the USA, the UEFA Champions league final in the UK, were the first instrumental act to perform on the hugely popular series GLEE, and were broadcast to over 1 billion viewers as part of China's CCTV New Year's Gala in 2015. Their huge success in Japan was crowned with the Golden Disc Award for their second album IN2ITION and as a result, 20th January has been officially certified as a ‘2CELLOS Day' in Japan by Japanese Anniversary Association.
Sulic and Hauser have played the cello since childhood; Sulic graduated from the acclaimed Royal Academy of Music in London, and Hauser from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, both in 2011.
Sulic has won a series of top prizes at numerous prestigious international music competitions including First and Special Prize at the VII Lutoslawski International Cello Competition in Warsaw (2009), First Prize at the European Broadcasting Union "New Talent" Competition (2006) and First Prize at the Royal Academy of Music Patron's Award in Wigmore Hall (2011) among others.
Hauser has worked with acclaimed classical artists such as Mstislav Rostropovich, Bernard Greenhouse, Mennahem Pressler and Ivry Gitlis, to mention a few. He has collected no less than twenty-one first prizes at the national and international music competitions and performed twice for Prince Charles in Buckingham and St. James's Palace.
Their latest album CELLOVERSE was released in January 2015 and debuted at No. 1 on the classical and crossover charts worldwide. Across this and their albums 2CELLOS (2011), IN2ITION (2012) and numerous side projects, they have collaborated with a huge range of artists, composers, and producers including Elton John, George Michael, Zucchero, Steve Vai, Lang Lang, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Queens of the Stone Age, Andrea Bocelli, Zubin Mehta, T Bone Burnett, Bob Ezrin, Humberto Gatica and James Newton Howard.

2CELLOS - Let There Be Cello, achieves perfection / MainlyPiano
Posted At : February 11, 2019 12:00 AM
Let me preface this review by saying that the cello is my second favorite instrument (after the piano) and that I absolutely love it when artists have no musical boundaries. The latest album from the Croatian duo 2Cellos, Let There Be Cello, achieves perfection in both areas. I had seen some of their videos, but this is the first album I've heard and I am completely hooked. I spent most of last evening watching 2Cellos' YouTube videos and am just blown away by Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser's mastery of their instruments as well as their fearless combinations of musical styles from classical to hard rock to movie themes and beyond. For example, how often do you find a medley of Beethoven and Led Zeppelin that really works??? This album also features two original compositions, which are also compelling. From driving rhythms to elegant, soulful ballads, these two young artists can do it all and do it all well. If you are new to 2Cellos' music, you have to check it out! Let There Be 2CELLOS / STAGEANDCINEMA
Posted At : November 15, 2018 12:00 AM
A little bit Celtic, a little bit rock and roll, a little bit classical, a little bit world music, and a lotta schmaltz and you get the idea behind 2Cellos, the duo of youthful, sexy Croatians Luka Šulić and Stjepan Hauser. who put their skillful playing behind revamps and remakes of a wide array of genres. Sony Classical got behind them following the pair's YouTube sensation updating Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal." The rest since 2010 is arena-filling history. This is the type of instrumental classical crossover music that could easily be the soundtrack for an Irish dancing show or the latest Cirque extravaganza. For Let There Be Cello, the classically trained cellists know their audience: Those adoring screaming, swooning fans who love a gorgeous melody but probably would never set foot in a concert hall. Just as they have done for their past four releases, 2Cellos gives us movie themes (Pirates of the Caribbean; Rocky), classic pop (Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah"; John Lennon's "Imagine"), classical ("Vivaldi Storm"), and original compositions. They set their strings afire while the backgrounds sound as if Vangelis were the music arranger. Torrid and fervent, the boys aren't going for mere lush romanticism here - they dig in with tons of passion as if to ignite the ardor of tens of thousands of fans at a football stadium. Some of it works alright, some of it is way overblown. They may be out to reinvent music, but these David Copperfields of the cello world aren't even slightly interested in reinventing their own conventions. SEE THE STAGEANDCINEMA PAGE -

Lighting and video rental specialist Colour Sound Experiment has invested in new Robe MegaPointe moving lights, Blackmagic video control technology and new pre-rigged trusses, all of which is out on the current 2CELLOS tour playing arenas in key capital cities around Europe. West London-based Colour Sound is providing lighting, video, rigging and crew, working closely with lighting designer Crt Birsa and production manager Chris Griffiths. The UK performance was a roof-raising extravaganza staged at London's Royal Albert Hall with the band accompanied by The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra. They played out some of 2CELLOS hugely dynamic repertoire which went from the decorum and refinement of assorted film scores to the raucous rock-out mayhem of AC/DC and the Rolling Stones covers. Crt, a big Robe fan, was delighted when Colour Sound was able to offer its brand new Robe MegaPointes. The fixture was launched in September and this is one of its first European tours. It is the first time he's worked with Colour Sound and comments that it's been a "totally positive" experience. 2CELLOS set for Pinewood Bowl / Lincoln Journal Star

So Stjepan Hauser, what will those who come to Pinewood Bowl Wednesday see when you and Luka Sulic, aka 2Cellos, take the stage? Just two guys playing cellos? Yep. But, Hauser said, a 2Cellos show is far from a sedate, classical music recital. "We do all this crazy stuff on just two cellos," Hauser said by phone from Croatia. "It's all about how creative you are. We play all kinds of music in one show. We start really gentle with classical music and film music. Then it gets more and more crazy and the end of the show is a rock show. It's a real journey." p.p2 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 10.0px Helvetica; min-height: 12.0px} The film music comes from "Score," 2Cellos' fourth album that was released earlier this year. It's filled with famous movie music: themes from "The Godfather," "Love Story," "Chariots of Fire," film-related songs like "Moon River" and, very timely for its Lincoln show, a medley of songs from "Game of Thrones," the video for which has garnered more than 1 million YouTube views. 2CELLOS - Score is KUCI 'Featured CD'
Posted At : June 26, 2017 12:00 AM
On Score, 2CELLOS - Stjepan Hauser and Luka Sulic could pass for the Property Brothers on HGTV, which says nothing about their playing but surprisingly says a lot about their their personas. Commercial to the core, all about the upfront sexiness of their presentations, these cellists, backed by, and I mean backed by not accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra, take pop classical themes from TV and film, ("Game of Thrones", "Titanic", "Gladiator" and other obvious choices) and create ear candy for folks who choose not to listen. Signed to Sony Music Masterworks, the group's latest CD, "Score," features their take on classic songs from films ("Titanic," "Chariots of Fire") and television ("Game of Thrones"). "So we travel a lot for work. But we love it. Over the past few years, the best reward for us has been doing something that seems to inspire a younger generation to play an instrument or make music. That's the best reward you can get and we are very happy when parents tell us that their children started playing music because of us." A mellow 2CELLOS on Score / WOSU Public Media
Posted At : March 16, 2017 12:00 AM
Upon discovering 2Cellos, you might be tempted to consider the duo a one-trick pony. They are well-known for performing powerful arrangements of songs by artists ranging from Michael Jackson, Avicii and Mumford & Sons to Guns N' Roses, Led Zeppelin and AC/DC. But they play sold-out houses of all ages around the globe, and for good reason-they can flat-out play. I watched the duo's sound check when they were in Columbus and FELT their music as much as I heard it while standing in the BACK of the house. When Score, the new release from 2Cellos, showed up, I took it to the car to audition. I anticipated an audio explosion when I started the recording. Instead, I got lush melodies from both classic films (Cinema Paradiso, The Godfather, Breakfast at Tiffany's) and current favorites (Game of Thrones and The Lord of the Rings). When you wach the Game of Thrones video, you'll wonder how long before Šulić is in the cast. You have never seen cello players like Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser, together known as 2CELLOS. It's astonishing; these young Croatian cellists have taken cello to a new level. Their playing style is uniquely diverse, ranging from classical and film music to pop and rock. Luka and Stjepen are both classically-trained musicians and their main focus and dedication has always been playing live, yet they have no limits when it comes rocking out AC/DC. As Sulic said, "we love AC/DC as much as Bach". "Both are simple and convincing in what they do", Hauser added. Sulic and Hauser have both played the cello since childhood, and they met at a master class in Croatia while still in their teens. Sulic graduated from the prestigious Royal Academy of Music in London, and Hauser from the acclaimed Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. The dynamic duo achieved sensational success in 2011 when their version of Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" rocked the world. The YouTube video went viral, receiving over three million views in the first two weeks, and over eighteen million views as of May 2016. After this huge achievement, Luka and Stjepen got a record deal with Sony Masterworks and an invitation to join Sir Elton John on his worldwide tour. 2CELLOS were the first instrumentalists to be featured on Glee. They have also appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, played during the live stream of Monday Night Football in the USA, the UEFA Champions League Final in the UK, and The Bachelor Live Wedding Special among others. Their self-titled debut album 2Cellos, and subsequent albums IN2ITION and Celloverse, are available from Sony Music Masterworks. The latest album, Score, comes out in March 2017 and combines 2CELLOS' distinctive style with the most popular melodies ever written for classic and contemporary movies and television. 2Cellos: Viral Sensations Create a Self Titled Album
Posted At : August 26, 2013 12:00 AM
Living in a small town in Croatia, 24-year-old music students, Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser, are living a dream come true – and quickly! After posting a self-made music video of them performing Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" on their cellos, the longtime friends received more attention than they ever expected. Within days, the video became a viral sensation and received millions of views. It got the attention of Sony Masterworks who signed them to a record deal. Concurrently, they received a phone call from legend Elton John who invited them to join him on his European tour this Summer and Fall. They recently made their U.S. TV debut on The Ellen DeGeneres Show where they performed "Smooth Criminal." "I feel so blessed that all of this is happening – a record deal with Sony Masterworks and a tour with Elton John – who would have imagined?!" relays Stjepan Hauser. Their debut album will be released on July 19 and will feature Sulic & Hauser's unique spin on hits by Guns N' Roses, U2, Coldplay and Kings of Leon among others. "We grew up with Michael Jackson, U2 and Nirvana. The melody and structure of their songs really inspired us to arrange them for 2 cellos. Bands like Coldplay, Kings of Leon and Muse also write songs with those similar melodic qualities – so we had a great time digging in and making them part of this album too," says Luka Sulic. The duo just released a second single and music video to Guns N' Roses classic "Welcome To The Jungle" and like their first video, it is spreading quickly, getting over 1 million views in the first week! Of the new single Hauser says: "Covering 'Welcome to the Jungle' was a real challenge but that one we were up for! We chose this song because we thought that it could sound like a whole symphony using only our 2 cellos. We're really proud of it and think it rocks!" 2CELLOS also decided to record another Michael Jackson song – "Human Nature." "Even though we had already recorded 'Smooth Criminal' we wanted to also include 'Human Nature' because it is one of the most beautiful songs by Michael Jackson. It also allowed us to incorporate the use of pizzicato, which is my favorite technique," says Hauser. -

Internet sensations, 2CELLOS, the cello duo of Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser, have beat the sophomore jinx with the release of their second album. Since gaining fame through a series of viral videos of the dynamic pair playing high-energy contemporary pop songs on cellos, 2CELLOS has teamed up with many big-name stars on IN2ITION (Sony). Joining the group on the album are Elton John, Glee's Naya Rivera, guitar-god Steve Vai, Italian rock singer Zucchero, and classical superstar pianist Lang Lang. The new album offers a fresh twist on such pop classics as Fleetwood Mac's "Oh, Well" (with Elton John), the Prodigy's "Voodoo People," Coldplay's "Clocks" (with Lang Lang), Rihanna's "We Found Love," Muse's "Supermassive Black Hole" (with Naya Rivera), Cher and Nancy Sinatra's "Bang Bang" (with Sky Ferreira), the Police's "Every Breath You Take," and Elton John's "Candle in the Wind." The album's first music video is the group's searing rendition of AC/DC's "Highway to Hell," with guitar shredder Steve Vai. "Our fans love this song at our live shows and we really wanted to add it to the album," Hauser says. Adds Sulic: "It was very exciting to work with an amazing musician such as Steve and we really want to show the people that the cello can rock as hard as the guitar!"

2Cellos brings the fusion again with In2ition
Posted At : February 12, 2013 12:00 AM
It has long been popular to infuse pop with classical themes but lately we've begun to see the reverse: classical musicians taking up modern influences. At the top of this trend have risen 2Cellos. Croatian team Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser were discovered online by Sir Elton John and subsequently signed to Sony Masterworks. Their self-titled debut album featured compositions by Kings Of Leon, Trent Reznor, Guns N' Roses, U2, and Michael Jackson, and their rendition of the latter's "Smooth Criminal" lead to a guest starring spot on Fox's Glee. 2Cellos' latest album IN2ITION brings back the fusion. And with it they've brought their inspirations to guest star. Sir Elton makes is on the opening track, along with pianist Lang Lang and vocalists Maya Rivera and Italian singer Zuccharo. And the songs are no less pop-derived than their last effort. Steve Vai joins the guys for a composition of AC/DCs "Highway to Hell." They take a pass at "Every Breath You Take," and even add their own unique flavor to their discoverer's hit "Candle in the Wind." -
